How It Feels To Heal

Most of us are sleepwalking through our own existence. The majority of us are unconscious; we are fed beliefs by our caregivers, who were enthralled by their inherited belief systems. We continue to be fed beliefs by our extended family, our peers, our environment, people in positions of authority, and an endless stream of unforgiving media.

Learning to challenge your mindset is a bit like going to stretch class for the first time (or any fitness class). You put on the gear, you find a mat, it all looks pretty simple, until you try to balance on one leg and fall flat on your arse. When I was a teenager, I attempted a Chinese handstand in full lotus, with a class of people watching, and farted, monumentally.

The thing is, if you are new to exercise of any kind, it’s going to feel strange and the next day, you will ache in places you never even knew existed.

When you go regularly, each session becomes easier, as by degrees, you become more comfortably supple. Around six weeks later, you will clearly see that you are considerably further on.

Taking control of your mindset is very much like that (apart from the fart bit). It appears to be straightforward, but you may feel frustrated by what feels awkward, especially as you learn to implement clear and loving boundaries.. You may berate yourself for the previous seeming lack of flexibility in your thinking as you work on your growth.

You may also get so incredibly excited by discovering things about yourself and realising it’s never too late to heal, you may even want to go too fast, and attempt a mental version of Chinese handstand...

Seriously though, just like any kind of fitness regime, this kind of work takes a few weeks to bed in, and the rest of your life to perfect. Once you get the hang of it, you will love it, and just like my gym buddies, you won’t want to miss training.

Healing your inner child will be the most liberating act of your adult life.
